Dharma Speech contest was held at schoolmate hall of medical college in Seoul National University on 8th March 2016 organized by Buddhist Eloquence Association of the Korean Buddhism(president, Dr. Lee Chi-Ran). Fifty speakers took participation in the 46th Buddhist Dharma Speech Contest and twelve speakers won prizes of ministers and the speaker of National Assembly including chancellor of Dongguk University. Themes of Dharma speech were various subjects according to speakers but mainly on buddhist propagation and protecting national treasures etc.
As far as I know, event of Dharma speech contest is held in Korean buddhism only throughout the globe. This dharma speech contest has been held every year organizing by Buddhist Eloquence Association of the Korean Buddhism since its foundation and the first contest in 1970 at Unhaesa temple in Youngcheon county, Gyungsang northern province. Founding members are Ven. Pyo Dochul, Ven. Mujinjang, Ven. Pyo Jawon and Ven. Myungbop including Dr. Lee Chi-Ran.
At that time spiritual master was Most Ven. Lee Cheongdam who filled posts of president and supreme patriarch of the Jogye Order of the Korean Buddhism. The second spiritual master was Most Ven. Yoon Goam who filled post of supreme patriarch of the Jogye Order of the Korean Buddhism twice. And the third spiritual master was Most Ven. Lee Seo-ong who filled post of supreme patriarch of the Jogye Order of the Korean Buddhism twice. The forth spiritual master was Most Ven. Kang Seokju who filled post of president of the Jogye Order of the Korean Buddhism twice. Present spiritual master is Most Ven. Boseong who is spiritual master of Songkwangsa monastery in Mt. Jogye of the Jogye Order of the Korean Buddhism.
The first president of Buddhist Eloquence Association of the Korean Buddhism was Ven. Phyo Dochul, The second president was Ven. Mujinjang. The third president was Ven. Phyo Jawon. Present president is Dr. Lee Chi-Ran and secretary general is Mr. Yoo In-Bae(then ven. Myungbop) who has been in the post since 1970.
The Buddhist Eloquence Association of the Korean Buddhism organized dharma speech contest every year since 1970 in order to promote buddhist propagation and to understand what buddhism is and to protect national cultural asserts etc. So far three thousand speakers participated in the contest since 1970 and over nine hundred speakers won prizes for awards of ministers and the speakers of the National Assembly.
Judges are examining speakers’s eloquence.
